Carol Lynn Alpert, director of strategic projects at the Museum of Science in Boston, also serves as director of informal science education for the NSF Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing headquartered at Northeastern University, and as Co-PI and Co-Director for the Center for Integrated Quantum Materials headquartered at Harvard University.
Carol Lynn has worked in the area of nanoscale informal science education since 2001, leading a team that produces museum programs, interactive media, science theater, TV science news, guest researcher events, and professional development workshops. She was a founding co-PI of the NSF Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network. She wrote and directed “The Amazing Nano Brothers Juggling Show” and produced “The Nanomedicine Explorer” interactive multimedia exhibit and the six-DVD video series “Talking Nano” (available at talkingnano.net). She has published several articles about nanotechnology, education, and public engagement in Materials Today, ASTC Dimensions, Social Epistemology, and in MRS, NSF, and ASEE conference proceedings.
Carol Lynn joined the staff at the Museum of Science in 1999 to lead the development of the Current Science & Technology Center, an award-winning live stage, exhibit, cablecasting, and multimedia production facility designed to engage public audiences with current research. The CS&T story is told in the chapter “Bridging the Gap” in the 2004 Altamira Press book Creating Connections. She has also written a partnership guide for science museums collaborating with university-based research centers.
Before joining the Museum of Science, Alpert developed and produced PBS science and history documentaries for the NOVA Science Unit, Frontline, the American Experience, Scientific American Frontiers, War and Peace in the Nuclear Age, and The Nobel Legacy, and films for the American Museum of Natural History’s Hall of Biodiversity. She edited the best-selling business book The Art of Possibility by Zander and Zander for Harvard Business School Press and Reagan: An American Story, by Adrianna Bosch for TV Books.
Alpert earned her BA Magna Cum Laude in the History of Science department at Harvard University and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, AAAS, ASTC, and MRS. She has won the Cine Golden Eagle Award, a NIST-DOE Best Practices in Science Communication Award, and an AMI Gold MUSE award.
